Why Do We Use Kettlebells?

exercise kettlebell personal training Mar 31, 2026

I joke that I started using kettlebells because I'm a lazy trainer.

And it's kind of true. I just don’t have two hours to spend at the gym! (Yes. I work here, but still…)

Kettlebells are just so efficient! They're portable, adaptable for all levels, and can accomplish range of motion, strength, and conditioning work in 20-30 minutes.

Plus: they're fun.

One Tool, Multiple Training Goals

With kettlebells, we can work on mobility, stability, strength, and conditioning without switching equipment constantly or needing tons of extra reps or sets with smaller weights.

I love  Turkish get-up for teaching shoulder stability, thoracic rotation, core strength and hip mobility all in one movement. (Plus it’s a BEAST of an exercise for all over strength.)

Deadlifts and swings build healthy hips, posterior chain strength, full body integration and cardiovascular conditioning.

Presses will overhead strength and shoulder stability, but humble the heck out of you while teaching full-body tension and breathing..

Carries? You’ll end up with grip strength, core stability, healthy shoulders, better breathing mechanics and postural endurance.

One piece of equipment. Multiple training outcomes. BOOM.

They're Adaptable for All Levels

This matters more than people realize sometimes.

A complete beginner can learn fundamental movement patterns, mobility drills and stability practices with a light kettlebell + carries with a heavier bell. (The joy on someones face when they realize they can pick up the big one!!! The dream.) An experienced lifter can be challenged with heavier weights, more complex movements or ballistics like swings and snatches… or just by adding extra tension and stability challenge with the smaller bells.

You don't need different equipment for different experience levels. You just adjust the load, variety and complexity of the movement along the way.

This means you can progress without having to buy a whole new home gym, learn an entirely new movement system or get a gym membership somewhere. . Your nervous system already understands the kettlebell and your body gets to pattern the movements. Then just build on that foundation!

They're Portable and Space-Efficient

Ya’llI LOVE barbells. But they are almost entirely bi-lateral (meaning, you have to train both sides of your body together which we don’t love around here all the time,) they require space, a rack, plates, and usually a dedicated area.

Kettlebells? You can train in a small corner of your living room. Take them to a park. Pack them in your car. And train bilateral OR unilateral (one sided) movement seamlessly.

This isn't just convenient. It means you can actually be consistent. You're not dependent on getting to a specific facility with specific equipment.

The Movement Patterns Transfer

There are five major human patterns - push, pull, squat, hinge and rotate - that you can learn in just five kettlebell movements (press, clean, goblet squat, swing and TGU) that transfer directly to everyday life.

Hip hinging (swings, deadlifts) is how you pick things up off the floor safely.

Squatting (goblet and bottoms up squats) is how to get down to play with your kids or check out that cool thing on the bottom shelf.

Pressing (overhead press, push press) is how you put things on high shelves.

Rotation (Turkish get up) is how we get up and down off the floor, and shovel snow safely!

Anti Rotation (farmer carries, unilateral work)) is how you carry groceries, kids, or anything heavy

You don’t just get stronger in the gym.You get more capable in your actual life. My favorite teaching moment is still the email I got from a student in Middleton many years ago telling me how kettlebells were making him a better dad. I’m still riding high on that nearly 12 years later.

But Mostly, They're Just Fun

This is - arguably -  the most important reason.

There's something satisfying about the process of pressing a heavy kettlebell and putting it down. The joy of ballistic movements. The swing of a kettlebell. The smooth arc of a snatch. The controlled power of a clean.

Time and again, I’ve heard “I actually want to do it! It’s just easy to get myself to pick up the kettlebell and do a few carries. I just keep one by my desk, honestly.” And when movement feels good, consistency becomes natural instead of forced.

Different Tools for Different Goals

While I’m a kettlebell junkie and always will be - there are so many tools in our toolbox. Barbells for certain strength work. Bodyweight for fundamental patterns and calisthenics. Bands for rehab or activation work.

But kettlebells remain the foundation of a lot of our programming - and are a part of most classes! - because they're efficient, adaptable, and effective for building the kind of functional strength that supports your actual life.
