Starting Over in Your Fitness Journey

Oct 24, 2022

For many of us, fitness can be a journey of peaks and valleys.

There's a lot of life getting in the way, work needing to take priority, minor colds and major viruses, and just STUFF that happens, and it becomes really important to get good at 'starting over again.' Starting the habits. Starting the planning. Starting the work.

One of the best things you can do? We'll get to that!

What's one of the worst things you can do when working out after a hiatus?

Starting where you left off!

It's an easy way to get frustrated, get overly sore and - at worst - get injured.

Here's what I tell my clients about starting a fitness routine:

1. Start with something simple, that feels easy and is super motivating!

  • dance
  • walk (or walk/jog if you're a runner increasing distance again!)
  • bodyweight strength
  • yoga

2. LOWER. your expectations. INCREASE. your level of commitment to yourself.

  • Ditch the "I should do more" thoughts.
  • Embrace the small, consistent steps and disciplines.

This goes for fitness pros, too! I haven't run in years, but our jogging stroller is a great way to get a little sweat while keeping Wilder safe and contained + get some sunshine for us both!

Mostly at first? I walked. Jogged a little. Walked a lot more. Jogged until I felt like stopping. Walked a lot more. Got up to about 3 miles over the course of a few weeks! (Then I got COVID. Then another cold. But we're back out there walking and jogging slowly!)

You've got this! All athletes of all levels have ups and downs. IT'S NORMAL.

Place your hand on your heart. Silently commit to coming back to the movements that make you feel ALIVE. Take a breath. And go get started!
